You can turn on keyboard dark mode in under a minute. On most phones, the keyboard follows your system dark mode, so switching that on is usually enough. If you want a dark keyboard while the rest of the phone stays light, you need the keyboard app’s own theme setting.
iPhone: Use System Dark Mode
The built-in iOS keyboard has no separate theme option. It follows your phone’s appearance setting.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Select Dark.
You can also switch automatically. Turn on Automatic to change from light to dark at sunset. A faster route is Control Center: long-press the brightness slider, then tap the Dark Mode button.
Buying tip
If you want a dark keyboard with a light iPhone, install a third-party keyboard such as Gboard and pick a dark theme inside its app.
Android with Gboard
Gboard is the default keyboard on Pixel phones and many other Android phones. It has its own theme picker.
- Open any text field so the keyboard appears.
- Tap the gear icon, or open the menu in the toolbar.
- Tap Theme.
- Choose a dark color, or pick System auto.
System auto matches your phone’s dark theme. A fixed dark color keeps the keyboard dark at all times. You can also toggle key borders on or off.
Samsung Galaxy with Samsung Keyboard
Samsung Keyboard turns dark when you enable Dark mode under Settings > Display. To choose a keyboard theme on its own:
- Go to Settings > General management.
- Tap Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Open Theme and pick a dark option.
One UI lets you customize a lot from these menus. The keyboard is one setting, and the One UI app drawer layout is another worth adjusting while you’re in there.
Microsoft SwiftKey
- Open the SwiftKey app.
- Tap Themes.
- Select a dark theme from the gallery.
SwiftKey also lets you build a custom theme with your own photo as the background.
Keyboard Stuck in Dark Mode?
Sometimes the keyboard stays black even with light mode on. The cause is usually a single app. Developers can force a dark keyboard inside their app, and iOS respects that setting.
Try these fixes:
- Check whether the keyboard is dark in only one app.
- Update that app.
- Restart the phone.
- On Android, check the keyboard app’s theme. A fixed dark theme overrides system settings.
Watch out
High-contrast and accessibility settings can also change keyboard colors. Check them before you reset anything.
Does a Dark Keyboard Save Battery?
On OLED screens, yes. Black pixels draw little or no power. The savings from the keyboard alone are small, though, because it covers only part of the screen. The bigger benefit is comfort, especially at night.
FAQ
Can I get a dark keyboard without full dark mode on iPhone?
Not with Apple’s keyboard. You need a third-party keyboard such as Gboard or SwiftKey.
Why did my keyboard turn black on its own?
Your system dark mode probably switched on a schedule. Or the app you’re using forces a dark keyboard.
Does Gboard dark mode work on iPhone?
Yes. Open the Gboard app, tap Themes, and choose a dark one.
Will a dark keyboard theme affect typing speed?
No. It changes the color scheme, and on OLED screens it can save a little power, but layout and autocorrect stay the same.
